Education for Disadvantaged People throughout Motivational Instruction and Community Learning Process

The short report of the movie “Laskar Pelangi (Rainbow Troops)”
This movie is adopted from one of the best selling novels, Laskar Pelangi, written by Andrea Hirata. He originally comes from Belitong Island and he explored his real childhood experience in education into the novel. There are many educational values that we can catch from this story, particularly on different treatments in education between PN Timah School (special for high level class in society) and Muhammadyah school (for society in economic lower class and disadvantaged people). It makes us aware that people need equality rights in education and everybody has opportunity to be successful in his or her life. The evidences have been appeared in this movie how Muhammadyah School beat PN Timah school in many competitions. The students in economically lower class  also  have great motivations to struggle and believe that community learning process brings positive impacts to their future. Now, some of them in real life have to be outstanding persons amid of Indonesia citizens.

A. How the principal managed school instructions
His name is Pak Harfan. He was principal of a Muhammadyah school of Belitong. Every single year the school accepts few students because many people don`t interested to register their children to the school because of its fragile and minimum facilities. On the first scene of the film, Pak Harfan faced a problem. If the students are lack of 10 people registering this year, the government will close the school. Meanwhile, only 9 students and their parents attended to the school at the time. He kept going to wait who the next one would come to the school. And finally, someone (Harun) came as a savior and it meant that the school process could be continued. As a principal, he also participated in teaching students. He developed some values to manage instructional learning in his institution. We can conclude below:
1.      He never gives up related to educational process for young people even though there are many problems faced by the school.
2.      The religious and moral values are the main points for changing students and growing their good attitude in the future.
3.      He always gives motivation for students in participating in any competition to improve their confidence and achievement.

B.  Human capacity and the learning community available within the community
In another scene, there was a girl student named Flo, from PT Timah school who wanted to join with Muhammadyah School. The first time, she was impressed by performance of Muhammadyah school`s students in carnival with their amazing dance. She did not comfortable with the situation in her previous school because there were many obstacles to develop her human capacity in heterogeneous people. She thought that students did competition based on their parent`s class and strata. It was so boring to her. It was quite different in Muhammadyah school. At the time, she observed how the Muhammadyah school`s students could work and played together. They developed their thinking with wandering the nature and jumped to the community lives. The more students interact to their environments, the more their intelligent will grow to find their real passion. She wanted to liberate herself to cooperate with them and would do what they do. Students show characteristics regarding to human capacity and community learning such as:
1.      Students can interact directly with community process.
2.      All students in different backgrounds have opportunities in learning process.
3.      Cooperative learning must be built between students and students, teacher and students, and community-students.

C.  The support provided by the families of the minority to the school
One of the scenes described Ikal`s father carried out his children to the school by bicycle. His labor friends shouted at him that school is not useful for people like them. He ignored it and cycled straight forward to the school with his children. When he came to Muhammadyah school, he found many parents also with their children. They also wanted to register their children being the elementary school students. All of them provided education to their children amid their limited conditions. They have big hopes to their children to pursue their dreams to not to be like them. Even though some of them did not have many tools or not well educated, they believed that at least their children could write, read and count as basic needs in humanity. We can describe the support given by parents or community to the school:
1.   Families support education for children and give attention to their growing.
2.   They register their children to the school although they need their helps to conduct their home duties.
3.   They support each other to strengthening educational process for the children.
